The AJIS (Association of Social Information Journalists) is organizing a Datathon on June 23 and 24, 2017, on the theme of changes in the French social model. With the Agefiph, IPERIA l'Institut partner in this initiative to make social information more readable, interactive, and engaging.

In the era of open data, while social actors are producing large amounts of data, the AJIS offers imagining innovative journalistic formats and new digital data processing methods. It has called upon IPERIA, l'Institut, to support this approach for its expertise and commitment to social change.

The Concept of the Datathon

Gathered at the Simplon school in Montreuil (93), multidisciplinary teams composed of social sector journalists, journalism students, data experts, statisticians, developers, and designers will have 48 hours to brainstorm and imagine new digital formats designed to enrich, think differently about, or even reinvent the treatment of social information. The teams will then report on emerging forms of solidarity and engagement, changes in work, discrimination, etc.

Participants will face three challenges over two days:
  • Highlight stories and life paths based on data: data visualizations, interactive/transmedia storytelling, etc.
  • Use data to investigate social facts and uncover new topics: data analyses, cartographies, etc...
  • Develop innovative journalistic tools: scraping tools, chatbots, crowdsourcing tools, etc.
They can rely on the datasets provided by the event's partners and on all sources of information or open data accessible online (data.gouv.fr, open data platforms, etc.).

IPERIA, mentor and jury

Nadège Turco and Laëtitia Tariel, respectively the Director of Development and Marketing and Communication at IPERIA l'Institut, will mentor participants during this Datathon. Their mission: provide guidance and information according to their field of expertise and help them create their prototype. Support, advice, and recommendations will be their watchwords during these two intense days.

At the end of the Datathon, a jury of experts will meet to designate the best project. It will be composed of:
The projects will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
  • The prototype corresponds to the theme of the Datathon.
  • The prototype is presented from a journalistic angle or responds to a journalistic problem.
  • The team has used at least one partner dataset.
  • The project is original and innovative.
  • The prototype is presented without bugs and is functional.
