More than 580,000 positions are expected to open over the next decade — a key insight from the latest Barometer on the personal employer and home employment sector. This strong demand concerns a range of essential roles such as childminders, childcare providers, personal carers, and family assistants. To meet this need, it is crucial to maintain efforts in professional training, engage new talent pools, and increase public awareness of these careers. That’s precisely the mission carried out by IPERIA on behalf of the sector, particularly through its initiative COEPS, which offers targeted support and guidance. Explanation.
Growing Demand in the Home Employment Sector
The 2025 Barometer1 of Jobs in the Personal Employer and Home Employment Sector offers fresh insight into the outlook for roles such as family assistants, personal carers, childminders, and childcare providers. These professions are confirmed as solid career opportunities. Current projections estimate that 580,000 jobs will need to be filled by 2035. This demand is driven by employee retirements, demographic changes, and the net flow of new hires versus departures in the sector (excluding retirements). Notably, the regions of Île-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes alone will account for 37% of the jobs to be filled by 2035.
The study also highlights that within the next decade, 44% of employees working for personal employers will retire—a total of 549,330 departures. This high retirement rate reflects the sector’s demographics: in 2022, over half of its workforce was aged 50 or older, with an average age of 48 (compared to 41 across the wider private sector). The only group younger than the average private sector employee are home-based childcare providers. Conversely, those working with elderly, disabled, or dependent personal employers aged 70 and over tend to be among the oldest, with an average age of 51 in 2022.
A Pool of Sustainable Jobs: Family Assistants, Childcare Providers, Childminders, and Personal Carers
Who will fill these roles in the future? Take personal carers, for example—this profession represents a robust source of long-term employment. It is estimated that 392,810 positions will need to be filled by 2035, mostly to support the growing population aged 70 and above. Working in the homes of elderly, dependent, or disabled employers in a society that values aging in place is both meaningful and full of opportunity.
In early childhood care, 42% of current childminders are expected to retire by 2035. For childcare providers, who tend to be younger, the retirement rate is projected at 25% over the same period.
To ensure a steady pipeline of qualified workers who can support families, children, and vulnerable individuals, the ongoing professionalization efforts initiated in 1994 must continue. For 30 years, IPERIA has led this mission, acting on behalf of the personal employer and home employment sector.
Enhancing Recognition and Appeal of Home-Based Professions
IPERIA advances this goal by developing and registering professional certifications and qualifications at various levels, recognized by the National Directory of Professional Certifications (RNCP) and the Specific Directory (RS). These official recognitions validate home-based occupations, strengthen career security, and help create clear paths for advancement within the sector.
This certification framework is regularly updated to meet sector needs and reflects real-world conditions. It is delivered through a network of accredited partners and training organizations, ensuring that (future) employees can access training opportunities more easily—even while working.
